Melds
There are 2 types of groups or meld:

Sets of 3 of a kind or 4 of a kind (same value), eg. 7♥-7♣-7♠.
Runs of 3 or more cardsin the same suit.. eg 7♥-8♥-9♥-10♥.

Deadwood Cards
These are cards with which you canīt form any groups or melds. You can add up the total score of your deadwood cards by adding the numerical values of the cards—aces have a value of 1, face cards 10, and all others score their actual value. You canīt share one card to make up 2 melds. Each meld has to contain unique cards.

At the beginnning of the game, the dealer (preselected, deals 10 cards to his opponent and himself, although is some gin rummy variants this is 7). The very next card is the upcard, and is positioned face up making up the start of the discard pile. The rest of the cards make up the stock pile. They are placed face down on the table.
[edit] Strategy

The rules of Gin rummy are easy- itīs the strategy that gets more complex.

How you Play
Each time it is your go, you must either:
  1. Draw the top card of the discard pile, or thetop card from the stock pile, and then
  2. Throw away one card from your hand onto the discard pile.
On the first mover, the non-dealing player has first option of taking the upcard. If the non-dealing player does not want the upcard, the dealer is given the opportunity to take it. If the dealer also does not want it, the non-dealing player must draw from the stock pile.
