Gin Rummy  is played with a standard 52-card pack of cards. Aces are worth 1 and the ranking of the cards is from low to high, ie A-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-J-Q-K.

The aim of the game is to score more points than your opponent.

You do this by trying to improve your hand by building "melds" and taking out and "deadwood". There are 2 types of melds:

Sets of 3 of a kind or 4 of a kind, eg K♥-K♣-K♠.
Runs of at least 3 cards within the same suit, eg 4♣-5♣-6♣-7♣.

The "deadwood" cards are those that sit outside these groups. The total sum of the deadwood cards can be worked out by the following:
Aces: 1 point,
Face cards: 10 points
All others: as their numerical values.

You canīt share cards across melds. Each card can only feature in one meld.

The Deal

The person dealing switches after every round. The dealer deals 10 cards to himself and his opponent and places the next card face up on the table next to the remaining deck. This is known as the discard pile. The resrt of the cards are placed face down adjacent to the discard pile, (the stock pile).

The other player now has 2 options:
(1) Take the upcard and playing 1st .
(2) Pass the option to take the upcard to the dealer. If the dealer does not make a move, play moves on with the non-dealer taking a card from the stock pile.
